Harriet Mae Hoy Sweeney died peacefully in her sleep while surrounded by her children July 3, 2017. Harriet was born Sept. 13, 1924 in Fort Pierre, S.D., to Roberta Smith Hoy and Solomon D. Hoy. She was the eldest of six children; Robert Hoy, Judith Hoy Wolfe, Donald Hoy, Richard Hoy and Myrna Hoy Royal.
The Hoy family moved to Oregon in 1941 after Harriet graduated from high school in Fort Pierre. Harriet then graduated from secretarial school in Portland and went immediately to work.
Harriet met Arnold Joseph "John" Sweeney in 1943 while he was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. They married and had three children, Mike Sweeney, Linda Sweeney Farnsworth and Tim Sweeney. Harriet returned to work in 1955 and the family settled in N.E. Portland.
Harriet made sure the family was always busy and involved. They were active in outdoor activities including camping, skiing, hiking, mountain climbing and scouts. Harriet was always involved with professional organizations.
Harriet was blessed to have eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all that were fortunate to know her and be touched by her kindness and friendship.
There will be a celebration of Harriet's life at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 in Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes, in Happy Valley. Remembrances may be made in Harriet's memory to the Girl Scouts of Oregon and S.W. Washington.
