Raymond Vernell Crompton
January 31st, 1941 – June 17th, 2017
Raymond passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, June 17th, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society – Fairlawn Village – Gresham, Oregon. He was born January 31st, 1941 in Marion, Illinois. With work scarce during the Second World War, Raymond’s father Vernell moved the family out west to pursue the promise of employment with Oregon Steel, where he would work for the next 38 years.
Raymond attended Lents Elementary School and Franklin High school, where he graduated in 1958. He worked in the welding and specialty gas industry for 48 years, as a plant manager and eventually an auditor before retiring from Airgas in 2006.
In 1962, Raymond met the love of his life, Darlene Joyce Engeman. He courted her for a year, driving from Portland to Corvallis nearly every weekend to see her. They were married at the First Christian Church in Scio, Oregon on May 4th, 1963. They were best of friends and were happily married for 35 years before her passing in 1998. They had two sons and four grandchildren.
Raymond was a very dedicated family man and hard worker. He was a kind, selfless man who always put everyone’s needs before his own. In Raymond’s later years he never met a stranger. Raymond was loved by so many people and will be greatly missed by many, but we take comfort in knowing that he is in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ. We will love you forever.
