Rudolph “Rudy” Joe Mantia passed away on October 23, 2016 from cancer. He was at his home in Happy Valley with his family at his side.

Rudy was born on July 28,1936 to his Italian parents, Michele and Caterina Mantia. He was raised in SE Portland with his sister Lillian and brothers Tony and Charlie.

Throughout his high school years, he played on the JV football team, participated on the rally squad, and played the trumpet in the in the orchestra. Since high school, he continued to meet with his friends for a monthly luncheon.

After graduating from Cleveland High School in 1954, he enlisted in the Coast Guard where he remained on active duty until January 1959. He received his Honorable Discharge in January 1963. During that time, he also completed two years at Portland Electronics College and received a diploma in Radio Servicing in ‘62 and Electronics Engineering in ‘63.

In 1958 he married Carol, his wife of 58 years. Together they raised 3 children; Tina, Tim and Terry. He worked as a supervisor for the United States Postal Service. After 36 years, he retired and received his Service Award.

Throughout his life Rudy enjoyed gardening, landscaping, ballroom dancing, listening to music, watching westerns, James Bond, and college football. He also loved going to the beach with his family, and spent some time traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, Utah, and Colorado. Rudy and Carol were once ballroom dance instructors on a cruiseliner touring the Mexican Riviera. He spent time with the many friends he made at his retirement home in Happy Valley playing bean bag baseball, crossword puzzles, singing in the choir and visiting with friends. But most of all, he loved his family gatherings watching his 3 children, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren play and grow.

Rudy was a quiet man with a gentle and kind heart. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Until we meet him again, we hold him close in our hearts.

Lyrics

"Whatever You're Doing (Something Heavenly)"

It's time for healing time to move on

It's time to fix what's been broken too long

Time make right what has been wrong

It's time to find my way to where I belong

There's a wave that's crashing over me

All I can do is surrender

[Chorus]

Whatever you're doing inside of me

It feels like chaos somehow there's peace

It's hard to surrender to what I can't see

but I'm giving in to something heavenly

Time for a milestone

Time to begin again

Reevaluate who I really am

Am I doing everything to follow your will

or just climbing aimlessly over these hills

So show me what it is you want from me

I give everything I surrender...

To...

[Chorus]

Time to face up

Clean this old house

Time to breathe in and let everything out

That I've wanted to say for so many years

Time to to release all my held back tears

Whatever you're doing inside of me

It feels like chaos but I believe

You're up to something bigger than me

Larger than life something heavenly

Whatever you're doing inside of me

It feels like chaos but now I can see

This something bigger than me

Larger than life something heavenly

Something heavenly

It's time to face up

Clean this old house

Time breathe in and let everything out
