Gheen R. Abbott III

Oct. 24, 1927  to Aug. 27, 2013

Gheen Abbott passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Grove, Oregon, on August 27, 2013 with his two sons by his side.  He will forever be remembered as a kind and compassionate man, whose wise and humorous nature touched the lives of many.  He was a supportive husband, father and friend and an avid reader and conversationalist who kept on top of current world events.

Gheen was born October 24, 1927 in Los Angeles, California.  His youth was spent soaking up sun on the beaches of San Diego and fishing out in the ocean with his father and uncle.  He graduated from La Jolla High School and then served 3 years in the Army Signal Corps from 1946 to 1949, ultimately being placed in charge of his radar unit on the Island of Okinawa.

He enrolled at The University of California Berkeley, where he received his AA degree, before completing his Bachelors degree in Economics at the University of Southern California.

In 1955, Gheen married Constance K. Lewis of Seattle, Wash., and had 2 sons, Gheen R. Abbott IV and Christopher L. Abbott.

His civilian career began at Convair Aircraft Company as an aircraft radar technician. He worked at Fairchild Semiconductor and other electronic companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, before joining Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company as a bookkeeper & timekeeper.  In 1968, he moved his family to Lake Oswego, Oregon, while working with Atkinson Construction on the I-205 freeway project.  Following the completion of the project in 1971, he became the owner of an insulation company, while simultaneously initiating a career as a licensed tax consultant.  He continued to prepare individual tax returns until his retirement in 2012.

Gheen is survived by his two sons.

A Memorial will be held for Mr. Abbott on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at The Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St. in Lake Oswego.

I always enjoyed my talks with Gheen and Connie over the many years. Randy and Chris were lucky to have such fantastic parents and teachers of life.

I worked with your Mother at the library. She and Gheen were a wonderful couple. I knew your Father from parties. I always remember him a a great conservationist and always smiling. Wanda Snyder, retired MCL Science & Business

I was sorry not to be able to attend Gheen's funeral. I now live in Olympia, WA I worked with Connie for years and she and Gheen cared for our wonderful family dog, Wolf, when we were out of town. Wolf would wink at them; they loved him. I will never forget their many kindnesses or dancing the foxtrot with Gheen at a library union party. Two of the most special people I have ever been priviledged to know. All my love to the family,
Jean Barnett Padovan
